AEO is the practice of structuring your content so AI search engines — ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews — pull your brand into the answers they give users. Here is the complete playbook.
In 2024, "SEO" meant ranking blue links in Google. By 2026, an estimated 25% of search queries are answered by AI assistants — ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude, Google AI Overviews — before the user ever sees a blue link. AEO (Answer Engine Optimization) is how you stay visible.
What is AEO?
AEO is the discipline of structuring your content so that AI answer engines select and cite your pages when generating responses to user questions. Where classic SEO targets ten blue links, AEO targets the 3-5 source citations a generative model includes in its answer.
The core difference: classic SEO optimises for ranking, AEO optimises for extraction. An AI model needs to be able to pull a specific factual answer from your page, attribute it correctly, and (ideally) link back. That requires a different content shape.
Why AEO matters now
- 13% of Google queries already trigger an AI Overview that may answer the question without a click.
- 800 million weekly ChatGPT users routinely use the assistant for research instead of Google.
- < 1% of sites are properly AEO-optimised, meaning early movers capture disproportionate visibility.
The unit economics are compelling: AEO restructuring is one-time work, AI engines cite the same sources repeatedly, and citation builds brand recognition even when users don't click.
How AEO differs from classic SEO
| Dimension | Classic SEO | AEO |
|---|---|---|
| Goal | Rank in top 10 | Get cited in AI answer |
| Format | Long-form, comprehensive | Question → 40-60-word answer |
| Schema | Article, BreadcrumbList | FAQPage, HowTo, QAPage |
| Anchor | Backlinks | Citation count |
| Measurement | Position, CTR | Citation share-of-voice |
The seven AEO techniques that move the needle
1. Question-first headings
Phrase H2/H3 headings as the exact questions a user would ask. Don't write "Pricing"; write "How much does X cost?". AI engines do question matching, not topic matching.
2. Direct, self-contained answers
Immediately after each question heading, give a 40-60 word answer that stands alone — a reader (or model) shouldn't need surrounding context to understand it. Put the most important fact in the first sentence.
3. FAQPage schema
The single biggest AEO ranking factor is FAQPage JSON-LD. Google explicitly uses it for both classic FAQ rich-results and AI Overview source selection. ChatGPT and Perplexity also weigh structured Q-A as authoritative.
{
"@context": "https://schema.org",
"@type": "FAQPage",
"mainEntity": [{
"@type": "Question",
"name": "What is AEO?",
"acceptedAnswer": {
"@type": "Answer",
"text": "AEO is..."
}
}]
}
4. Definitional language
Use the explicit pattern "X is Y" or "X means Y" in your opening sentences. LLMs are trained to recognise these as authoritative definitions and lift them directly into answers.
5. Lists and tables
AI engines preferentially extract structured content. A bulleted list of 5 items is more extractable than the same content in prose. Tables for comparisons are best-of-class.
6. Author bylines and credentials
E-E-A-T (Experience, Expertise, Authoritativeness, Trust) signals matter for AEO. Include author bios with credentials, publication dates, last-updated timestamps, and citation sources.
7. Internal Q-A clustering
Build topical clusters of related questions, with internal links connecting them. When AI engines see a hub of related answers all on one domain, they treat it as an authoritative source.
Schema markup priority order
Not all schema is equal for AEO. In priority order:
- FAQPage — for any page with multiple Q-A pairs
- HowTo — for procedural / step-by-step content
- Article + author + datePublished — for editorial content
- Organization + sameAs — for brand entity recognition
- BreadcrumbList — helps with navigation extraction
How to measure AEO success
Traditional rank tracking misses AEO entirely. You need a different set of metrics:
- Citation count per AI engine — are you cited in ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Claude for your target questions?
- Citation position — when listed, are you the first source or the fifth?
- Share-of-voice — across N target questions, what percentage of AI answers cite you vs competitors?
- Referral traffic — Perplexity sends actual clicks; track these in GA4.
Tools like Otterly.ai, Profound, and AthenaHQ specialise in this; for smaller budgets a manual weekly check across the four big engines is enough.
The 30-day AEO sprint
If you do nothing else this quarter, do this:
- Week 1: Identify your 10 most important customer questions (use PAA, Reddit, AnswerThePublic, Perplexity itself).
- Week 2: Rewrite your top 5 pages with explicit question H2s and 40-60-word direct answers.
- Week 3: Deploy FAQPage JSON-LD on every restructured page; validate with Google's Rich Results Test.
- Week 4: Set up tracking. Check ChatGPT/Perplexity/Gemini/Claude weekly for your 10 questions. Establish baseline.
Common AEO mistakes
- Keyword-stuffing question headings. AI engines detect this; phrase questions naturally.
- Buried answers. If your answer is in paragraph 5, no AI engine will find it. Lead with the answer.
- Wall-of-text content. Break into Q-A blocks; AI extracts structured content preferentially.
- Missing or invalid schema. Always validate with Google's Rich Results Test before going live.
- Ignoring author credentials. "John Doe" doesn't convince an LLM. "John Doe, M.D., 15 years in cardiology" does.
